Artists are cool.
beginners, hobby artist, professional artists, gore/Horror artists, comic artists, all of them.
Art is awesome, all forms of it.
Writers, crafters, sculpters, cosplayers, musicians, all of them.
Art is an amazing form of self-expression. Keep going at it; don't let anyone put you down because your art "isn't good enough". You ARE good enough.
And to all my new artists, you're AWESOME!! Without new artists coming in, our community would eventually die. Keep practicing, with time you'll get better.
Don't spend too much time comparing your art to others, don't put yourself down. Don't stress about if your style is 'good enough', just do art. Create because it makes you HAPPY. Art shouldn't feel forced.
You're all awesome!!!

hii i remember a while ago you mentioned getting a bunch of udemy courses for blender & i was wondering if there were any character modeling ones that you tried and liked (or if you know of any other good ones elsewhere)? i have some that im looking at rn but its hard to decide what to start with when they all seem just slightly different lmao
(also idk if u remember but i am the same person that asked about ones for environments/buildings way back then as well. i did get some of them & made a little progress & then got distracted by Other Projects & havent touched blender since & now im switching gears to character stuff lmao. as one does)
yes i do remember you! you activated my trap card once again. now you have to sit and read my ramblings for 30 minutes. or just skip to the bolded sentence i got and finished this one, but if you remember the basics from your environment courses, i don't know if i would recommend it more than anything you can find for free on youtube tbh. if you feel like you've forgotten basics, it's a good place to start as the course starts from an absolute beginner level for hotkeys and adding materials and etc. or if you want a certificate! they do go very into texture painting and baking the details of your sculpt onto your lower resolution model, which the next one i'm going to recommend does not. but again you could always find how to do that for free elsewhere. i did it before the 4.2 updated videos, so i can't say anything about the new ones, but i don't think they cover manual retopology, more complex clothes, hair, or using UDIMs. and now my brief ramble on retopology: there's nothing wrong with just doing a decimate modifier if it gets the job done, but if you're wanting a model that moves, you definitely want to do it manually to make sure it deforms properly! there are a TON of videos on retopology, i would poke around different ones to see what method works best for you when the time comes, and watch (or at least skim) this to understand Why certain things in topology work like they do (like how to topologize a forehead to get a crease when someone raises their eyebrows). (though you don't always need topology to get things like that done. warning for auntie whispers's creepy self done semi-realistically.)
ornithopter course is goated for your hard surface modeling and rigging learning needs. includes learning about UDIMs. harley davidson goated for an even more complex hard surface model, but does not cover rigging or UDIMs (i think. i haven't done this one yet. just based off the preview). hard surface modeling is good to know for props, weapons, uhhh cars, carriages, things that can be a Part of a character without being the character. BUT ! it's nothing you can't logic your way through though using everything you learnt so far/in the environmental courses and a little youtube + reddit searching.
for something free, i definitely recommend this playlist by bran sculpts. it's a bit less guided than the course so you might have to pause here and there, but he goes at a medium pace and says everything he's doing. the hotkeys in the corner can be a little hard to see because of his ui scale early on, but he covers the things i listed earlier that the (original) course didn't; retopology, clothes, and hair (again idk because i haven't taken the 4.2 version). does not cover hair particles, so you will have to go elsewhere for that, but the method he does use is Very Very good.
flycat is a character sculpter who i recommend watching once you're familiar with the process. they do something a little different each video, so there's always something to learn, but they are very efficient and talented. you will have to either slow the video speed down or buy the video on gumroad to see everything they're doing, but i've gotten most of it through just slowing it down.
then for specific things, it's best to just search around! all those slightly different methods have something to offer, and what one person does might not make sense for the specific thing you need so you can always try another method. curly hair is definitely something that i'm always finding new videos on because i'm never quite satisfied with how i can get it to look.
i will also always plug the art of effective rigging (and to a lesser degree alive) for if you're planning on getting into making models move. the same guy does have a character creation course, but i haven't looked too much into it. looks like another good option though, but a little expensive compared to the other options out there
i think the biggest thing with character creation is that since it is what the most people are interested in (as far as i can tell), there are going to be a LOT of things out there to teach you for free. since they are free, they will all be missing something, so enjoy the process and look things up as you run into things you don't know while making your own models. anything you do for a humanoid model applies for a quadruped or... etc, you just will have to look a Bit harder if you're having a specific problem, or experiment and use your big brain.
other misc things: i always keep this chart on hand, very useful when transitioning from head to neck topology or hands to wrists, etc etc

shape keys can carry your animations if that's what you hope to do eventually, 2d face sprites can be controlled with bones, never be afraid of mixing mediums (taking a picture of a model from blender then drawing on top of it for example), unreal engine can be used as a compositing tool and floral scatter tool and water generator tool, annnnd my last advice is to look out for humble bundle sales. there were a few blender focused ones last year that had a bunch of really good add-ons (and a course or two) for cheap, like shaders plus, florapaint, retopoflow, and claydoh, along with like 20 others all for 35 bucks. right now, there's this concept art bundle, some of which are focused on character creation in 3d software. they tend to use zbrush and substance painter, which is a shame that they are so expensive. if only there was some way to GET these programs INTO your PC for cheap -- free even! ... .COM

Asynchronous Assignment
I will be looking through all of the 6 videos, give my thoughts on each of them, then have my overall thoughts on all of them.
Kurt Schwitters
Kurt had a fascination with his usage of collage, utilizing it as an extension of his paintings. His whole life was to be very experimental with his art, constantly changing from poet to graphic designer, performer, etc. It is very interesting that he strives to touch into the various types of arts just because he mostly wanted to.
Joseph Cornell
I really appreciate Joseph's work, where some of his pieces would be miniature versions of various objects that we see in our life, or it can resemble an actual box containing lots of stuff. I love his fascination with birds as well as it gives of a more lively expression. I could appreciate the attention to detail he made throughout all his art works.
Louise Nevelson
I love how one box in each of her art can contain lots of pieces that have a connection to each other. What's fascinating about these assemblings is how they are all craved from wood. Although her coloring consists of either black or white, it's pleasant to observe to when you look close enough.
Relief Sculpter Explanation
It's interesting to know how a sculpture can be created with a certain amount of relief that can be pressured into it.
Clay Explanation
I have definitely delve into this back then, and it is hard to smooth out clay as a beginner, in which there may be some imperfections. Even so, I definitely did enjoyed trying to form various things using clay.
Tile Preparation
Using this as an example can help me better understand of what I may be getting into this class. I will make sure to note this as preparation whenever we get started.
I can get a clear idea of how 3d art is implemented in various types of media. Makes me feel like these artists gets motivated with these types of art because it gives a big opportunity on endless possibilities on what can be created.
Many of the artist collect their work in various ways. Example include Louise Nevelson collects wood to scrape into, Kurt Schwitters utilizing collages as an extention for his art, and Joseph Cornell collecting boxes to create a purpose upon it.
